About Lincoln Towers

History

If you’ve seen the movie musical “West Side Story,” then you’ve seen one of the last living documentations of the Lincoln Square neighborhood before the construction of Lincoln Towers. The abandoned buildings that once stood in the place of the Towers (known as Lincoln Towers Apartments) provided the backdrop to the 1961 film — a stark snapshot of the area that bares little resemblance to the thriving and dynamic neighborhood we see today.

Formally called San Juan Hill, the Lincoln Square neighborhood is a product of urban revitalization efforts that started in the 1940s and came to a head in the early 1960s with the construction of the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. Led by John D. Rockefeller III, the construction of the beautiful Lincoln Center and surrounding buildings quickly turned Lincoln Square into a thriving cultural hub.

Built in the early 1960s, Lincoln Towers’ eight buildings and 3,837 apartments began as rent-controlled units before converting into co-ops in 1987. Since this conversion, every building and its surrounding parks have undergone consistent renovations and improvements, ensuring its status as a modern, convenient, and luxurious sanctuary in the heart of the city.
